Have you listened to this song by Maverick City: Man of Your Word? The Collins dictionary describes a man of his word as a person who can be trusted to keep a promise; one who does what they say they will do. I quickly began to look into God’s word to see just how God is a ‘Man of His word’.
In Deuteronomy 1, Moses is speaking to a generation that was born and bred in the wilderness for 40 years. None of them is beyond 60 years other than Moses, Joshua and Caleb. He describes the reason why their parents had all died in the wilderness despite having defiantly, miraculously and victoriously left Egypt.
Their parents had seen the Lord lead them out of Egypt with His hand. They had eaten ‘manna’ which no one had ever tasted. They enjoyed roast chicken in the middle of the desert and streams of water flowing from rocks. God walked with them as a pillar of fire at night and as a cloud by day. God asked them to move forward to the Promised Land with no fear (Deuteronomy 1:21). Yet, instead, they chose to send spies first to check the land, showing a wavering belief in God (Deuteronomy 1:22).
Centuries before this, their ancestor, Abram, had a similar instruction to move to a foreign land (Genesis 12:1-3). He immediately took his wife, Sarah, Lot, his nephew and all possessions that he had accumulated and moved from Ur to Canaan (Genesis 12:4-5). Unlike, Moses and the Israelites, Abram left without sending out spies to check the land.
God continues to speak to His people all the time, and like the Israelites, we may spend time rationalizing what God means. It’s easier to disobey than to obey, for this requires faith, which normally does not make sense. We are not to add or subtract from the command God has given (Deuteronomy 4:2). God is a man of His Word.
Hard times also cause us to question God’s goodness and grace. Over the last couple of months, I’ve gone through various losses and disappointments, especially regarding my career. There are moments when I have questioned God’s love for me. It seems impossible that pain, disappointments, suffering, sickness, joblessness and the love of God would go together. Yet God still is a man of His Word.
You see God has placed His Word above His name (Psalm 138:2, NKJV). He watches it to ensure that it comes to pass (Isaiah 55:11). Philippians 1:6 (NIV) says that He who began a good work will carry it on to completion. God cannot break His Word and His promises are unchangeable (Hebrews 6:17, MSG). He is faithful to all His promises and loving to all he has made (Psalm 145:13). God is faithful, even when we are faithless (2 Timothy 2:13) for He cannot go against His nature by becoming unfaithful. Not one of His promises ever failed (Joshua 21:45). We must believe that God is a man of His Word.
Whenever we doubt God, we are like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind (James 1:6-7). We belittle God and imagine that He is like a man who changes His mind (Numbers 23:19). We think that He is weak and unable to accomplish what He has said (Isaiah 59:1). We are reminded that the unbelievers and the fearful will have their place in the fiery lake of burning sulphur (Revelations 21:8).
Maybe your faith has been greatly shaken. Like the sick boy’s father who prayed an honest prayer in Mark 9:24 said, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief.” Allow your doubts to lead you to a deeper belief in Jesus. One time, Peter found himself sinking while walking on water, but Jesus lifted him. We are to be merciful to the doubtful (Jude 1:22) as we model to others that God is a man of His Word.
Has the Lord recently spoken to you about something? Does it look impossible? Are your feelings getting in the way? Are your logic and reasoning challenging God’s Word in your life? Are life challenges and pain overwhelming you that you have doubted God’s love? The antidote to doubt is believing (John 20:27) that God is a man of His Word.
Hebrews 10:23 (NIV) – Let us hold unswerving to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.
God was angry with Israel for their unbelief and He swore that none of them would enter the Promised Land. The Israelites missed it. We don’t need to miss it. We can turn and fully put our faith in Jesus, anchoring our hope and trust in Him, being immovable and unshakable, and firmly believing the Word of God. Since God is in us, we shall not fail
and He will help us (Psalm 46:5). God is a man of His Word.
The rainbow is a faithful reminder of God’s promise to us. He can be trusted. Has your faith been shaken recently?
You can pray this prayer with me:
Dear God,
You are a man of Your Word. You keep promises. You watch over your Word to perform it. You are faithful even when am faithless. You are unchanging even when am shaken. God, you have never failed, and you won’t start with me. You are here with me and patient with my infirmities and faithlessness. Help me overcome my unbelief and doubt. Since you have said that it is done, then I believe Your Word. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
